Versatile Crops for
Your AEROTOWER
The AEROTOWER system is incredibly versatile, supporting a wide range of vegetables, herbs, and greens. Currently, you can successfully grow an impressive variety of plants, including lettuce, Swiss chard, peas, beans, tomatoes, basil, and more. Herbs like oregano, thyme, dill, and sage thrive in the aeroponics environment, while vegetables such as cucumbers, zucchini, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and peppers flourish with ease. The system also accommodates leafy greens and delicate herbs like catnip and purslane, making it perfect for diverse aeroponics gardening needs.
Greatly Extend Your Growing Season!
In our area, you can’t put out tender plants like pepper and tomatoes outside until the 24th of May. I plan to transplant my tender annuals into a traveling tower (on casters) at the beginning of April. On days that are above freezing, I will wheel the tower out into the driveway during the day and then back inside at night. As the weather warms I can leave them outside overnight as long as there is no danger of frost.In the fall, if there is a danger of frost, again I will move it into the garage, and then back outside the next day.
If you don’t have a garage, what about covering it in plastic with a little heat bulb inside?
By extending the season on both ends, I should be able to gain almost an extra 2-3 months of growing time!
What Can I Grow In AEROTOWER?
While the AEROTOWER excels with many crops, certain root vegetables can also be grown with some modifications. Beets, turnips, and onions are suitable for the system when you manage the bulb’s position above the pool noodle ring or net cup. Initially, you may need to gently tug the plant to encourage the bulb to sit comfortably on top of the growing medium. With this approach, you can successfully harvest root crops while enjoying the benefits of aeroponic gardening.
However, some root crops do not perform well in the aeroponics AEROTOWER system. Crops like potatoes, carrots, parsnips, and sweet potatoes are challenging to grow due to their need for extensive underground space. These plants require more soil depth and a different growing environment to develop properly, making them less suitable for the AEROTOWER’s vertical, soilless aeroponics system.
